Tips for Parents (all year)

In the Beginning

Make sure your child has all the necessary supplies on the first day of school.  A supply list will be sent to you before school begins.  On the first day of school, I will send you a "Parent Information Folder" with all the information for your child to successfully start school.  If your child becomes shy or tearful during the first weeks of kindergarten, don't be alarmed.  Such reactions are normal.  Reassure your child that things will be better as he/she becomes adjusted to school.  In the morning, leaving your child quickly actually helps both you and your child.  Shortly after you leave, your child will become distracted and busy with many fun activities.

At Home

Try to sit down with your child each day to look at the items he/she brings home from school.  Benefit: You'll see what your child is doing, and your interest will encourage him/her.

Clothing

Send your child to school in practical clothing.  Shoes with soft soles, such as tennis shoes, are safer on the playground and in the gym than sandals and flip flops.   Accidents may occasionally happen so please send an extra change of clothes in a plastic bag with your child's name on it.  We will keep these clothes in your child's backpack for easy access.   Also, please label backpacks, jackets, boots, hats, and mittens.

Book Bags

Get a book bag your child can open and close easily.  It should be big enough to hold a large library book.  Label the bag with your child's name and the teacher's name.  And notice what he/she takes to school.  For example, toys can be a real distraction.  Only send toys or home items on your child's show-n-tell day.  Please check your child's backpack daily and remove papers and/or notes from the teacher.

Money

Please send all money in an envelope or a Ziploc bag.  Label the envelope with your child's name and what the money is to be used for.

Lunch

Does your child have lunch at school?  Can he open his own lunch box, thermos, and food containers?  Look for containers that are easy to handle.
