Reading-During
our Reading portion of the day the students will be participating in small
literacy groups. Most of these literacy groups will consist of
activities involving and developing fine motor skills and can be completed
independently. The students will be working in small groups with me
during this time as well working on phonics, reading and writing
skills.
These are the Kindergarten high-frequency words that your child is expected to learn this year. The ones that are highlighted are the words we have been introduced to so far. am, I, the, little, to, a, have, is, we, my, like, he, for, me, with, she, see, look, they, you, of, are, that, do, one, two, three, four, five, here, go, from, yellow, green, blue, what, said, was, where, come
Shared Reading-Together we enjoy reading various types of reading which include trade books, big books, songs, poems, charts, etc. These types of reading help the students develop the phonemic awareness and reading skills to create strong readers. We begin very slowly by identifying letters we are learning about, formation of the letters, comprehension, vocabulary, sequencing, prediction and various other reading skills. These large group activities helps build self-confidence, interaction with peers, and listening skills. Writing-We are all writers in Kindergarten. We begin on the first day of Kindergarten and write right up until end of school. Each child writes on his own level. I encourage the students to try to sound out and spell the word as he hears it. You would be amazed at what a child can write! In the Spring we will be the authors of a bound book. I look for sponsors for this book so every child will be able to receive a copy of the bound book. Math-Our math is broken down into two parts. The first portion of the math lesson is typically a large group instructional activity and then progresses into small group activity to practice and summarize the large group lesson. The second portion of math is individual math exploration. During this time students are allowed to get a math tub and practice patterns, sorting, measurement and various other math concepts taught. Centers-During developmental centers students are exploring communication with peers, building structures with blocks, stimulating their minds through Smartboard or computer activities. This part of the day is a highlight for every child. Special Areas-This block of our day is a very fun and connective part of all instructional areas. The topics chosen involve various parts of the curriculum. We try to incorporate art activities during these special units, too. Some of the units we cover are apples, Fall, Holidays around the world, Pirates(Yes, we even walk a gang plank), ocean life. These are just a few examples of the fun we have in Kindergarten. |
