4th Grade Reading
WE JUST COMPLETED A UNIT ON FABLES. AFTER READING A VARIETY OF FABLES WE DETERMINED THE MORALS OR LESSONS OF EACH AND LEARNED ABOUT THE DIFFERENT CHARACTERISTICS OF FABLES AND SOME OF THEIR WRITERS. OTHER TOPICS COVERED SO FAR( AUTHOR'S PURPOSE, CAUSE AND EFFECT, SEQUENCING, MAIN IDEAS AND DETAILS, REFERENCE SOURCES AND TIME ORDER WORDS, GENERALIZATION, DRAWING CONCLUSIONS, FAIRY TALES AND LEGENDS, AND WE ARE CURRENTLY COVERING RESEARCH SKILLS AND REFERENCE MATERIALS. The Scott-Foresman Series is used. Students complete vocabulary activities each week, cover stories, do independent reading activities which are self-pace, and complete reading kits. Leveled Readers are used for Accelerated Reading along with other readers. Students will do a book study the last few weeks of school.
SPELLING- Students do not have a weekly spelling test. I concentrate more on spelling skills and how to spell words correctly. Such as changing y to i and adding es, double consonants, derived words, compound words, and so forth. We use worksheets and different activities for these skills. I fell that many times when a student studies for a spelling test, they may memorize them for that day and then they forget or do not retain those words. But, if we really focus on how to spell words correctly they will learn the rules.
* EACH CLASS WILL ALSO BE COMPLETING A PROGRAM CALLED "DAILY SCIENCE" WHERE VARIOUS TOPICS ARE COVERED AND REPEATED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR USING DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES. THE DAILY SCIENCE ACTIVITIES WILL BE KEPT IN A SCIENCE NOTEBOOK.
